I was having the same problem as doom_doubt. Being told the file was in use and I needed to close it and try again. BUT! Thanks to adm845's suggestion (right click on the folder where you istalled rosetta stone, ie. c:program files(86)rosetta stonerosetta stone v3 go to properties, click the security tab, click edit, then go through the different group or user names, then click on "full control" for each one. This should allow you to install the patch without getting the "file in use" error message--this works for Vista as well as XP), I am now running Rosetta Stone v.3.2 on BOTH my XP desktop and Vista desktop. This is why I love places like this...at least when we all try to help each other enjoy the applications we take time to upload/download.
Thanks to deified and Aelwyn, I tried that already and it worked. But I want to use a mic eventually. I don't have one connected at this time. Wondering if my current audio settings are not compatible. I intend to go out and buy a headset.
Aelwyn, thanks for that tip. That does get rid of the immediate issue, but it does then create a 2nd one. As buggy mentioned doing that creates a 1117 error for speech recognition. Seeing Deified's tips, I made sure my wirewall is not blocking RS, hell I even turned it off for a second to try it out, but it is not changing the error.
Anyone have any other suggestions on getting the speech recognition to work? Unfortunately that is one of the most important features to me about the program...It's what makes Rosetta Stone, Rosetta Stone you know?

this is working fine, i have a problem after updating to v3.3.5. 80% of the lessons was locked. patch didnt work this time . but i found a crack exe file in some stupid warez sites ,but there are so many virus surrounded , can u do something about this?

@ zwish: I'm trying to collect some information from users about what hardware they're running as many of us can't get the speech recognition enabled. I was wondering if it's a Creative problem, as they so often are the cause.

please still trying to find out if there is a way I an activate my langauges, r.s. says we only get part of the langauge without activating it, program is working great, seems like activating it would help to get more levels etc? is that true?

You weren't suppose to update the program. To get the languages to work I'm afraid u are going to have to uninstall/ reinstall and keep the firmware at V1.3

Oh and about seeding. You have to keep the file in whatever folder it had downloaded to. It's usually in: MyComputer/(your user name)/downloads.
If you still don't seed after that click on download this torrent. It will say something like, u have already downloaded this torrent would you like to add sources, say yes

To those of u having the rosettaltd.exe error if you uninstall and reinstall it will solve the problem. But when u uninstall make sure you delete any leftover files before reinstalling or it won't make a diffence. Do a windows search and delete any rs files. Delete the registry files left behind and do a manual search for any other left over files check
MyComputer/Cdrive/program files and delete the rosetta stone folder

Deified: What kind of soundcard/onboard sound are you using? I think that's the most important part since people on both XP and Vista are having problems getting the mic to work. Still looking for answers, however I found that the RS speech component can be updated. Also, if you have any other problems the RS site can diagnose them for you. I can CONFIRM that UPDATING the speech component will NOT HARM the RS install itself as I just updated to 2.2.1.

update: I thought I'd be smart and install a different audio card, but it didn't fix the problem. I installed new PCI card; checked to ensure audio and mic were working as default; UNINSTALLED RS , erased directory; RE-INSTALLED RS (10th time); same problem. Actually looked at the error this time, and it looks exactly like a former commentor:

When having problems with the speech componant via the rosettastoneltd.exe error unistall the rosetta stone program. Rosetta has been programed and released with several bugs in version 1.3, one of those is that rosetta does not uninstall clean from your pc thus leaving many traces of itself behind. Therefore when you reinstall the software any glitches or bugs that you may have had before I.e. The rosettastoneltd.exe error which affects the speech componant remain. So you MUST do a physical search any delete any traces that remain. I recommend downloading "your uninstaller pro 2009" (can be found on tpb) and using that to uninstall not only this app but any app, as the windows version is inefficiant. Your uninstaller pro 2009 will also delete any registry artifacts left behind by any program. Sadly it is not perfect and you will still have to do a manual search especially in hidden folders such as the "documents and settings folder" I doubt that you or other people (although possible) are having problems with your audio cards, microphones, audio settings etc. So don't buy any new hardware before trying to do a complete uninstall. I'm still not sure yet if the problem is with the software or the patch but I'll look into it.

Aelwyn, I am eager to see if you've gotten through the speech component error. I'm having the same problem here. I just updated from 3.0 so I could add Japanese and Chinese language packs, which seem to only be available for 3.2 on torrent sites.
